The Red Sox are reportedly one of the teams interested in Nationals ace Max Scherzer. It appears they may also be looking towards Washington for some offensive help.
According to the New York Post's Joel Sherman, the Red Sox have shown interest in slugger Kyle Schwarber, as have AL East rivals the Yankees and Blue Jays. Sherman adds that Schwarber could be traded by the end of the day Thursday, ahead of Friday afternoon's trade deadline.
Schwarber is currently on the injured list with a strained hamstring, but is expected to return sometime around mid-August. Prior to the injury, the 28-year-old was having the best season of his career, with a .253/.340/.570 slash line, 25 home runs and 53 RBIs in 72 games. Schwarber was the hottest hitter in baseball at the time he got hurt, hitting an absurd 16 home runs in an 18-game span from June 12-29.
When it comes to offensive help, the Red Sox have been linked mostly to first basemen, with the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo popping up the most. Schwarber, however, is a left fielder who has only played one career game at first base, back in 2017.
Schwarber is currently on a one-year deal and will be a free agent after the season.
