Tanner Houck scratched just before start against Yankees
NEW YORK - The latest bit of bad news for the Red Sox came just about an hour before first pitch of their game against the Yankees Friday night.
The team announced that its scheduled starter, Tanner Houck, was being scratched due to right shoulder fatigue. Taking his place on the mound was Richard Fitts.
Just about an hour before, Red Sox manager Alex Cora had said Houck was in line to make his first start since Sept. 4 when he gave up four runs over five innings against the Mets.
The righty's start had already been pushed due to fatigue in his right shoulder, although Houck did participate in his scheduled bullpen session Wednesday without incident.
Houck is in the midst of a season that has seen him pitch a career-high 169 2/3 innings, having totaled an ERA of 3.24 over 28 starts.
Fitts impressed in his major league debut Sunday, allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings against the White Sox.
