Arthur Maulet was able to test the market, but it seems he’ll be returning for another year in New York.

The Jets haven’t made any flashy moves yet in free agency, and they continued that trend by reportedly agreeing to a one-year deal with Maulet, according to WFAN Jet insider Brian Costello. The cornerback performed well last season after he was called upon amidst an abundance of injuries on Gregg Williams’ defense.

Maulet was not tendered a qualifying offer when the league’s new year began on Wednesday. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Maulet had an offer from another team but decided to re-sign with the Jets.

The 26-year-old started six games for Adam Gase’s team last year after previous stints with the Saints and Colts. He spent most of the early part of the season on the practice squad before injuries on defense resulted in him being promoted to the active roster on October 30.

Maulet played in every game for the Jets after his call-up from the practice squad. He established himself as a capable cornerback at a time when the team really didn’t have too many others. New York’s roster is still relatively thin at the position, so Maulet’s return makes sense.

General manager Joe Douglas seems to be continuing to follow his plan of making cheap, smart deals in free agency while he attempts to primarily build through the draft. The Jets of years past might have been flashing the cash in the early days of free agency, but things have apparently changed.

Still, there's a bit of work likely left to be done in free agency, especially at wide receiver. It's still unclear if Robby Anderson will also be returning or if he'll be poached by another team.
