Jets' owner Christopher Johnson refused to place a playoff mandate on the team when he introduced new head coach Adam Gase at a press conference on Monday.

There may not be pressure on Gase to make the playoffs in his first season as New York's head coach, but there is pressure on general manager Mike Maccagnan, who is entering his fifth year as the team's GM. Maccagnan's results during his time with the Jets haven't been great, so he will likely be on a shorter leash than Gase is.

On Monday evening, Maccagnan joined Mike Francesa on WFAN to talk about Adam Gase's hiring, as well as his own future role within the organization.

Maccagnan emphasized that he worked together with Johnson to choose Gase as the next coach.

"The final decision was Christopher's," said Maccagnan. "But I was very involved in the process and obviously had my input. We went through a pretty extensive search trying to identify the right candidates ... we pretty much did everything together. There were times where Chris may have had a separate time with each candidate and talked with them individually."

The power structure in New York is clearly topped by Johnson, but it gets murky below that. There has been speculation that Maccagnan's favor with ownership is slipping. The New Jersey native made sure to point out that both he and Johnson agreed that Gase was the best candidate for the job.

"When it was all said and done we felt very good about Adam in terms of his experience, having been a head coach already in the league and knowing the AFC East, and really going back through his whole history and felt very good about him being the right fit for us."

Maccagnan also denied that the team had offered the job to anyone else.
