The Giants continue to instill belief and inspire hope that Daniel Jones is their long-term answer at quarterback, but after two lackluster seasons and an 8-18 record, many are still hesitant to believe that the former sixth overall pick can be a difference maker.

Former quarterback Jason Campbell is among that group.

The former Washington Football Team quarterback joined Zach Brook on the latest episode of Upon Further Review and expressed his uncertainty about Jones being the answer in New York after the 24-year-old threw for 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 14 starts last season.

“I’m not completely sold on Daniel,” Campbell said. “I don’t think he’s done enough right now that would scare me if I’m Washington. Yes, they beat Washington twice last year, so from that standpoint, did they get better? Yes, they got better, they got another receiver in free agency. That helps Daniel out a lot.”

Big Blue did beef up its offense around Jones, signing wideout Kenny Golladay to a four-year deal and drafting wide receiver Kadarius Toney with the team’s first pick of this year’s draft. The Giants also added tight end Kyle Rudolph, and most importantly, Jones will likely have Saquon Barkley with him in the backfield to begin the season after tearing his ACL last year.

Still, Campbell things the Giants have a ways to go to be contenders in the NFC East.

“With Saquon Barkley coming back healthy, he’s gonna be stronger,” Campbell said. “I know they beat Washington twice last year, but they didn’t win the division. Washington did. Some years, some teams just have your number. I think, for whatever reason, the Giants just had Washington’s number last year. They don’t scare me going into this season though, but you have to respect them.”

Jones is entering a critical season with New York, as the team will be watching closely to see if it has its quarterback of the future. Jones will have a lot to play for, and a lot more weapons to play with, so Campbell expects an improved team, though not one that he believes will make a lot of noise in the division this season.

“Any time a guy is playing for his job or a coach is in his second year there, and it was hard for him to be a head coach the first year during COVID, trying to figure out protocols while you’re trying to put your team together,” Campbell said. “This year, he has a little longer a leash to do some things he wants to do. So I expect the Giants to be a better football team this year.”
