The Islanders made a splash on Tuesday, announcing they have agreed to a massive eight-year contract extension with Mathew Barzal.
The 25-year-old will be paid $9.15 million per year, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.
Barzal has played five seasons with the Islanders, and scored 15 goals while dishing out 44 assists last season. It was his fifth straight year in which he led the team in points.
The former first-round pick won the Calder trophy after leading all rookies in scoring during the 2017-18 campaign.
Barzal has publicly voiced his adoration for New York and playing on Long Island, and he backed up those words by committing to the franchise long term.
