Boomer: Jets' trade for James Robinson shows they're serious about playoff push

Breece Hall is lost for the season due to a torn ACL suffered Sunday, but the Jets did not wait long to get a replacement, trading for Jacksonville’s James Robinson – who had no rushing attempts and only one target against the Giants Sunday – on Monday evening.

Not just the “same old Jets,” as Boomer thinks this move shows just how serious they are about keeping the line moving in 2022, where they’re off to a 5-2 start.

“It shows you how serious the Jets are, and where they think they are in their minds,” Boomer said. “They actually think they have a chance at the playoffs, and when you have an opportunity to go out and get some reinforcements, you do it.”

The Jets dealt a sixth-round pick for Robinson, which Boomer says is “basically nothing,” so it wasn’t a huge haul for Robinson – who is coming off a torn Achilles last year, but ran for 340 yards and three touchdowns over the Jags’ first six games.

It could be that Robinson is never the same, or it could be that it’s just taking a little longer to get back to the form that had him on pace for over 1,000 yards from scrimmage again last season, but that’s a risk the Jets had to be willing to take.

“They’re getting a proven running back; I don’t know if he’s the same player, but I will say this: when he is running, he is running hard, and I think it’s a great complement to Michael Carter and the Jets’ offense,” Boomer said.

Now, though, the question is how the Jets can replace Alijah Vera-Tucker, who also was lost for the season on Sunday, in this case to a torn triceps.

“He’s a huge loss; he’s an All-Pro guard, but him going out to right tackle settled things down,” Boomer said. “It may have looked herky-jerky at times, but you knew you had somebody who would be able to fight for you at right tackle, and that to me is a big situation.”

Gio's take on whether or not the Jets can swing a similar deal?

"I don't know if you can make that same type of deal; I hope that he can, but when players move, it's edge rushers and wide receivers and running backs," Gio said. "I don't feel like you get that big offensive lineman that moves. You're usually picking guys off practice squads or finding guys buried on the depth chart, because teams don't want to trade depth at that position - even if they're out of it, offensive linemen are so precious, and there's so few good ones, that they don't want to part with them!"
