Craig Carton: Joe Douglas made mistakes not signing OBJ and saying 'Aaron Rodgers will be here' on Friday

Craig Carton was confident a few weeks back when he said Odell Beckham Jr. would be a Jet…but there he was on Monday, having to host Carton & Roberts with a little crow on his plate next to the delicious Ralph’s Italian Ice he had delivered to the studio.

“Got a great show today, unless you are a Jets fan realizing it is all falling apart right before our eyes,” Craig said as he opened the show. “The idea of getting Aaron Rodgers and OBJ and all that cockiness…gone. Now, we have to wonder, is Aaron Rodgers gone too? Because if the Jets couldn’t close on OBJ, who would’ve been their second or third-best receiver, to the Ravens, a dysfunctional mess with a pissed off quarterback who might not even play this year, how are you gonna get Aaron Rodgers?”

Evan then told Craig he had already said six things that Evan disagreed with, and reminded Craig (who didn’t want to hear it, until C-Mac played it) that it was Craig who said OBJ would be a Jet.

“I remember at the time telling you, it’s fine either way, because he’s not that good,” Evan said. “The fact the Ravens are giving him all that money, $15 million guaranteed, congrats to Odell, he’s a marketing genius, goodbye.”

Apparently, OBJ called the Jets and told Joe Douglas the deal, as he was supposed to visit New York on Monday, and apparently, Douglas declined.

“Of course, probably because it was crazy. To borrow a line from you: $15 million a year, what were they gonna do, pay him $1 million for every game he played the last two years?” Evan joked.

Apparently, it could be $1 million per week in 2023, as the deal could be worth another $3 million in incentives, and Evan believes that if the Jets had matched the offer, people would wonder what the Jets were doing.
Craig doesn’t agree despite saying it’s “a ridiculous deal,” and he wonders if not signing OBJ is a mistake by Joe Douglas – just like another mistake he made Friday night in Jersey City?

“I don’t care what my dear friend Joe Douglas says in front of 93 drunks who would’ve cheered whatever he said – I think he made a terrible mistake by saying on a microphone that Rodgers is coming,” Craig said of Douglas’ statement at Boomer & Gio Live that Rodgers “will be here.” “I think it’s great for the radio station and Boomer & Gio that he said it, but I think it was the dumbest thing he could’ve done – he’s fired when they don’t get Aaron Rodgers.”

Evan believes Douglas never would have made the statement if he didn’t know something, to which Craig replied that he was just playing to a crowd – and while Craig has never wavered on the Jets being in the driver’s seat for Rodgers, he also knows other teams are involved, and believes the Jets have been given a deadline of the NFL Draft to make the deal.
