The Jets and a star safety could have a feud brewing.
No, it’s not Groundhog Day.
After contract disputes landed Jamal Adams with the Seahawks via trade, Marcus Maye’s agent Erik Burkhardt is pulling no punches in the Jets’ handling of his client, who is set to hit free agency on March 17.
ESPN NFL insider Field Yates tweeted about the Jets’ potential $80 million in cap space for when free agency begins, and how that flexibility could offer the chance for multiple moves, and Burkhardt replied to the tweet to vent his frustrations.
“…Yet [the Jets] refuse to take care of their best player, captain and team-voted MVP in his prime who had several All-Pro votes,” Burkhardt said. “And who played out his entire rookie deal and even changed positions on his contract year (after they god rid of last year’s All-Pro Safety).”
Burkhardt concluded the tweet with a peace sign emoji, and later retweeted it to double down on his comments.
The Jets are expected to use the franchise tag on Maye and pay him nearly $11 million for the upcoming season, but Maye is widely regarded as New York’s top free agent after recording two interceptions, two sacks and two forced fumbles this past season. Should the team place a franchise tag on Maye, the two sides would have until July 15 to negotiate a new contract.
Jets general manager Joe Douglas spoke to reporters on Wednesday and said he and Burkhardt have had “productive talks” regarding Maye, and diffused Burkhardt’s twitter comments. Douglas also said he wants Maye with the Jets long-term.
