Odell Beckham Jr. was supposed to visit the New York Jets on Monday…and then late Sunday night, he announced on Instagram that he is signing a one-year deal worth as much as $18 million with the Baltimore Ravens.
It was known last week the Ravens had made OBJ an offer, but he was reportedly waiting to see where and when Aaron Rodgers landed before making his decision – but in fairness, it was highly unlikely the Jets had that much money to pay OBJ, even on a very back-loaded longer-term deal, with Rodgers in the fold.
So all the posturing, the meetings with the Jets at the Owners’ Meetings…was that all just a set-up?
“It almost feels to me like he used the jets, he set up the jets in order to go get paid someplace else,” Tiki Barber said Monday. “And it’s a shame, because I know the Jets have a focus only on winning. It's the most important thing that they need to do this next season; it’s not about developing players or putting on a good show or getting people in the house, it's about winning. That's why this whole Aaron Rodgers situation has been dominating our headlines, and Odell, he was the next piece towards winning and he left them out to dry.”
Tiki always knew that Giants fans were conflicted in their feelings about OBJ, but now, to him, the Jets fans are also right to “fully hate OBJ for hanging them out and using them so he could get this deal.”
For Sal Licata, who was in for BT Monday, that’s actually a good thing?
“I was at Easter with the family and I see the news, and my first thought was…THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST DAYS IN THE HISTORY OF NEW YORK SPORTS!” Sal rant-screamed. “Thank goodness, Odell will be someone else’s problem! I think you’re right – he did use the Jets, and clearly, this shows you Odell cares about Odell, which is fine. Go make the money, I’m not gonna knock somebody for doing that.”
Especially in this case, where the Jets perhaps averted a “disaster.”
“This would have been a disaster. Had he come to the Jets, I think it would have hurt Garrett Wilson and his potential development, and I don't think he should go to the Giants where they have good chemistry,” Sal said. “So, I’m happy. Look, he’s talented, but I’m glad Odell’s gone. Let Baltimore enjoy him.”
