Sal Licata floated the idea of Matt Ryan being the veteran quarterback that helps the Jets take the next step next season, and callers were quick to pick that opinion apart.
Safe to say Sal was ready for it.
Callers were quick to criticize Ryan’s disastrous season with the Colts, posting a 4-7-1 record while throwing a career-low 14 touchdowns against 13 interceptions, but Sal said the former MVP still has plenty in the tank to help a team like Gang Green.
“It wasn’t his fault,” Sal said of Ryan’s rough season. “If you watch the games, and I’m going to assume you didn’t, it was the offensive line, the lack thereof.
“If you don’t have a good offensive line in front of a pocket passer, you’re screwed…is Tom Brady useless? But he’s just a pocket passer? You were using the offensive line as an excuse to evaluate Daniel Jones. That’s not what I was doing. I already know what Matt Ryan is as a quarterback.”
The Daniel Jones comparison really sent Sal up a wall.
“The difference between Daniel Jones and Matt Ryan, you freaking moron,” Sal ranted. “Is that Matt Ryan won an MVP!
“Matt Ryan is better than anything the Jets organization has ever seen. The Jets organization wouldn’t know what to do with a guy like Matt Ryan.”
Some callers cut in with Derek Carr as a better option after Carr was benched at the end of the season, and both will likely be available this offseason. Ryan recently told reporters that he has no plans to retire, and it seems inevitable that he will be cut by the Colts. But Sal says Ryan is a much, much better option than Carr.
“I think Derek Carr sucks. How about that?” Sal said. “The same guy who just got benched by the Raiders, that’s the guy you want? You, and the organization you root for don’t have a clue. I do. If they listened to me, they’d be in a better position than they are right now.
“If you like losing, and apparently you do, because you root for a team where all they do is lose, then Derek Carr is your guy.”
