Sam Darnold’s Jets experiment included a 13-25 record with Gang Green, along with 35 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. Once the new regime of Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh took over, the team decided it was best to move on.
Darnold revealed on the latest episode of the Bussin’ with the Boys podcast with Titans lineman Taylor Lewan and linebacker Will Compton that he told the Jets brass they were “making a mistake” when shipping Darnold to the Panthers and using their second overall pick on Zach Wilson.
Darnold also spoke up about some of the criticism he received in New York during his struggles with Gang Green, after being the third overall pick in 2018.
“The part that pisses me is off is when people judge my game, like how I'm playing," Darnold said, via ESPN’s David Newton. "Then I'm like, 'Go strap it up. You’re a fan and I respect you as a fan. You can talk all the s--- you want, I'm not going to do anything at the end of the day, but take it easy.'
"What if I was like, 'The house you just worked on, piece of s--t.
You're so bad at tiling. You should really go get another job. Really think about your profession.' Sometimes you want to say stuff like that, but you can't.”
Darnold didn’t do much to back up his farewell declaration to the Jets front office after the trade, going 4-7 with the Panthers last season while throwing nine touchdowns against 13 interceptions, the second straight year he finished with more picks than touchdowns. Considering New York got a second and fourth round pick for Darnold, they likely don’t agree with Darnold’s sentiment that trading him was the wrong move.
