Jacob deGrom’s future will be the biggest question mark hanging over the Mets offseason this winter, but Billy Eppler once again reiterated at the GM meetings on Tuesday that he is feeling optimistic about the team’s chances of keeping their ace.
“I think there's a good deal of interest there on his part,” Eppler said. “That was articulated a number of times throughout the season and reiterated in our most recent conversation.”
Mark Canha said himself that deGrom enjoys New York and would like to stay, but of course, he would also like to be paid his worth. That shouldn’t be a problem for the Mets with Steve Cohen at the helm, but New York will have other moves to make this offseason, and would like to lock up deGrom so they could move on to other “business.”
“Everybody knows we got business to do,” Eppler said. “That’s part of the communication from our side to them and to everybody, we have business to do. There are players we want to acquire, things we want to accomplish this winter. We’re going to get down to it.
“But that draws back to my earlier statement where we want to stay in communication with each other and to be very transparent with each other.
They’ll have a sense of what we’re doing and hopefully we’ll have a sense of what they’re doing.”
