Jacob deGrom is now a World Series champion, one year after leaving the Mets, where he had spent his entire MLB career up to that point.
Sure, deGrom had no hand in Texas’ first-ever title thanks to a second Tommy John surgery, but C-Mac still doesn’t understand the lack of emotion or appreciation from Mets fans, who seem to have no reaction to deGrom being a champion.
“The face of that franchise, won two Cy Youngs, was the best pitcher in baseball for a three-year period…I remember taking calls from fans who wanted him traded because he deserved better,” C-Mac said. “He would throw eight innings, allow one run, and loses every game.
“I can’t imagine not feeling like Jacob deGrom was your guy. It felt like when he left, it was like ‘good riddance.’ That was the sentiment.”
C-Mac heard the venom from fans when deGrom left, as many were convinced he didn’t want to be in New York anymore. But he believes it was a two-way street, which led to his exit, and now, he’s a world champ.
“The Mets didn’t want him, just as much as, if not more, as he didn’t want to be a Met,” C-Mac said. “If I was a Met fan, I would have been a little more pissed off about it than ‘Good riddance, what a loser for picking the Rangers, see you in last place.’
“That was the feeling I got, was ‘Later loser.’”
