Chris Bassitt only spent one year with the Mets, but he endeared himself to the fans in Queens – and he gave the organization a classy shout-out on his way out of town again.
Bassitt, who signed a three-year deal with Toronto earlier this week, took to Twitter Sunday to thank the Mets organization for “an amazing” 2022 that formed “friendships we will cherish for the rest of our lives.”
Bassitt was acquired from the Athletics last winter and was 15-9 with a 3.42 ERA in 30 starts, throwing 181 2/3 innings. He also started the deciding Game 3 of the Mets’ NL Wild Card series with the Padres, taking the loss after allowing three runs over four innings.
The 33-year-old righty left for a three-year, $63 million deal with Toronto after the Mets signed Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, and Jose Quintana to fill the voids left by Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker, and Bassitt reaching free agency.
The transaction itself was a little bit full circle, as the Blue Jays designated LHP Anthony Kay – a Stony Brook native who was the Mets’ first-round pick in 2016 and dealt to Toronto for Marcus Stroman – for assignment to open a 40-man roster spot for Bassitt.
