David Stearns told reporters that there are multiple ways to define success when looking ahead to the 2024 season, and that was hardly inspiring to Boomer and Gio.
“We’re going Brodie Van Wagenen now,” Gio said, noting the infamous “our optimism needs to be adjusted” comments from the former Mets GM.
Boomer says the success will likely be dictated by how the Pete Alonso saga comes to an end. If the homegrown slugger has a good year and still leaves in free agency, then it would be time to get out the pitchforks.
“Let’s just hope Pete Alonso has a great season going into free agency, and puts the Mets on the spot,” Boomer said. “To me, if they lose Pete Alonso after he has a good year, that would be an issue. That would be a major problem.”
What if the Mets trade Alonso this summer, and initiate a further replenishing of the farm system? It may work out in the long run, but in the short term, it would be a very tough sell from Stearns in his first year.
“It may end up working out in the end, but if they have the offseason they have under David Stearns in his first offseason, then trade their most popular and productive player at the trade deadline, that will be a rough start with the fanbase,” Gio said. “It may work out in the end, but you would have to go through some angry fans.”
