As the Mets and Yankees, two of the highest payrolls in baseball, sit out of a playoff spot with just 10 days left before the trade deadline, Gio believes this could be the start of a dark age in New York baseball.
Yes, even with a Yankee team that hasn’t had a losing record in over 30 years, and a Mets team that just won 101 games and boasts the richest owner in sports, there are signs that both teams could be stuck in mediocrity for years to come.
“You could make a case that if things don’t get changed quickly with the Mets and the Yankees, even with all of the resources they have, you can make the case that they could be missing the playoffs for several years in a row,” Gio said. “I can make that case.”
For the Mets, Gio doesn’t care what kind of financial resources are at their disposal, because so far, they haven’t shown they can spend all that money on the right players.
“If Billy Eppler continues to be the GM, and they don’t bring in David Stearns, and there isn’t a different philosophy with Steve Cohen, then the money doesn’t matter,” Gio said. “They’ve given it to the wrong guys…They have the highest payroll in the history of baseball and they’re 18 games out of the division.”
Jerry isn’t as concerned, but for the Yankees, if they decide to not eat costs and look to avoid the luxury tax instead of fully financially committing to improving the team, then they might be in trouble.
“I don’t think the Mets will…[Cohen] is going to spend money,” Jerry said. “The Yankees, they may not win a World Series, but they can spend their way into a playoff team. If they start nickel and diming things…I don’t think the Mets will be that on a consistent basis. I don’t believe the Yankees will be too, but if that’s the way they’re gonna do business…why not?”
