Unfortunately, Howie Rose is going to have to put his season “in the books” come September.

Rose, the venerable play-by-play man for Mets broadcasts on sister station WCBS 880 AM, Tweeted Monday morning that the medical issue he has been dealing with all season requires surgery, so his final broadcast of the year will be Wednesday night’s Mets-Marlins game at Citi Field:

Rose will undergo surgery later in the week for the undisclosed issue. He also took a week off in April for medical reasons, after which he Tweeted the following:

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your kind thoughts and wishes this past week. I’ve been dealing with a medical issue which is being treated but thankfully will be back in the booth tomorrow night. Missed you a lot and can’t wait to return. Much love to all.”

Rose is of course an institution in New York sports and on the Mets call, starting the latter in 1995 on the Amazins’ TV broadcasts. He transitioned to the radio booth in 2004 following the retirement of Bob Murphy, and has since called games on WFAN (2004-13), WOR, and now WCBS 880 (since 2019) with Gary Cohen, Tom McCarthy, Wayne Hagin, Josh Lewin, Wayne Randazzo, and various fill-in partners.

Howie was also a constant on the WFAN airwaves from 1987-95 – as a show host and the play-by-play voice of the New York Rangers – and has been on our air as a guest or fill-in host numerous times over the years since (outside of his Mets duties). He also spent 20 years as one of the voices of the New York Islanders on both TV and radio as well.
