Jacob deGrom wants blame for Mets latest loss: 'I needed to go out there and put up zeroes'

Jacob deGrom's season ERA crept just over 2.00 following Tuesday night's loss to the Cubs, and while the Mets offense once again failed to find success against an inferior team, deGrom is putting the team's latest defeat squarely on his shoulders.

"Didn't make some pitches when I needed to there in the fourth," deGrom said. "Got a couple guys on and wasn't able to execute when I needed to.

"Tonight's on me. I needed to go out there and put up zeroes, and just wasn't able to do it."

The fourth inning was the deciding factor on Tuesday, and it didn't come without controversy. Down 1-0 after a second inning home run by Ian Happ, deGrom allowed the first two batters to reach in the fourth on back-to-back singles, and pinch-hitter Michael Hermosillo came up in an obvious bunt situation. But when James McCann fielded the bunt and tried to get the out at first, the throw hit Hermosillo, who appeared to be on the infield grass and not in the baseline.

But it was ruled a throwing error on McCann, loading the bases and setting up a sacrifice fly and a sac bunt to get two more runs across for Chicago.

DeGrom had to be nearly perfect given the current woes of the New York offense, but sometimes, even deGrom isn't perfect.
