As the Yankees play their home opener with a 6-1 record, Keith admits that it does add to the excitement and satisfaction knowing that the rivals across town have stumbled out to a 1-5 record on the season.
“It does make it a little sweeter,” Keith said. “A couple weeks ago, you heard on the FAN that the Mets had a better offseason than the Yankees. Just a couple months ago, you heard that ‘King Cohen’ was gonna get Yamamoto, and the Yankees were the ‘Bronze Bombers.’
“They punched above their weight class for one season and came crashing all the way down. Fast forward to where we are now. How do you feel?”
The season began with Mets fans taunting the Yankee faithful about Juan Soto coming to Queens in 2025, but Keith says those same fans now need to deal with the reality that their season is on the brink after just one week.
“‘Oh yeah, he’s gonna rent in the Bronx and buy in Queens…enjoy his spring training, because he’s gonna be ours.’ Stop it,” Keith said. “It doesn’t make any sense…Ohtani was supposed to wear that Mets jersey too. He didn’t pick up the phone.”
