Buck Showalter is always good for some memorable quotes and banter when he speaks to reporters, but the Mets manager had an especially entertaining story when speaking before New York's win over the Cubs on Thursday.
The story consisted of Showalter and his wife running out of gas on the way down to spring training, and Showalter had to hop on the back of a motorcycle to go and get some gas.
"We were headed down to spring training as a player, and this guy on a motorcycle stopped," Showalter recalled. "I got on back on the motorcycle, she was so mad. Like, 'Let me get this right, this guy rides off, what am I supposed to do? I'm sitting on the side of the road on I-10.' She wasn't happy. I said 'Well, take the license tag down of the motorcycle.'
"My wife is still mad at me about that."
How did they run out of gas? Well, it sounds like Showalter likes to tempt fate with how much father he can go on a dwindling gas tank.
"Are you one of those people that sees how low you can get their gas tank before you run out?" Showalter asked the group of reporters. "You look in the manual and see what size tank you got and then you see how much gas you put in there, and see how close you got it? You know you have.
"You got more. Roll the dice."
