James McCann is about to take his next big step towards a Mets return.
Buck Showalter told reporters on Wednesday that the catcher will begin a rehab assignment in Double-A on Thursday, and was taking batting practice on Wednesday as he recovers from his fractured left hamate.

McCann was placed on the 10-day IL on May 13, and has already missed more than a month. New York’s starting catcher struggled in his first Mets season after signing a four-year deal, and was batting just .196 with a .551 OPS in 56 at-bats this season.
