Jacob deGrom admitted that the thought crept into his mind during Saturday's start that it could be his final start in a Mets uniform.
"You know, I guess that went in to my mind," deGrom said. "But the hope was we'd win a baseball game and continue to keep playing."
DeGrom helped ensure that the Mets would get to keep playing by holding the Padres to two runs over six innings of work, grinding when he didn't always have his peak overpowering stuff and working around multiple San Diego rallies to keep New York in a position to pounce like it finally did in the bottom of the seventh.
Now, deGrom doesn't have to think about the potential end to his Mets tenure just yet.
"Like I said, the goal was to put us in a position to win and give us a chance and pass it on to Bassitt,' DeGrom said. "Go try to win a baseball game tomorrow."
