Reports: Mets to call up Brett Baty Wednesday after scratching Eduardo Escobar Tuesday

It wasn't Brett Baty time just yet on Monday when Luis Guillorme was placed on the IL – but just 24 hours later, it looks like the Mets' No. 2 prospect's time has come.

Eduardo Escobar, Tuesday's original starter at third base for the Mets, has been scratched in favor Deven Marrero, and reports have once again surfaced that Baty is joining the team in Atlanta.

Escobar has been battling left side tightness which forced him to leave a game early over the weekend, and he has only been able to hit from the left side over the last few days. He started at third on Monday after Guillorme went on the IL, and Marrero was the one recalled to fill Guillorme's roster spot.

Baty, the Mets' first-round pick in 2019, was "not an option" to be recalled after Guillorme's injury, according to manager Buck Showalter, and it's a move that made sense logistically – Marrero can provide the coverage at shortstop and second base that Guillorme did, even if Luis had ostensibly become the everyday third baseman, while Baty is hot corner only.

Now, however, with Escobar seemingly headed for an IL stint, the expectation per multiple reports is that Baty will arrive in Atlanta and be activated Wednesday.

Baty was hitting .364 in six games since his promotion to Triple-A earlier this month, after slashing  slash of .312/.406/.544 with 19 home runs and 59 RBI in 89 games for Double-A Binghamton.

The Mets will need to make a 40-man roster move to add Baty, as their only open spot was occupied when Marrero was added Monday, and their only potential candidate to be moved to the 60-day IL is RHP Drew Smith, who is out with a lat strain and has missed a little over three weeks.
