Jacob deGrom is headed for another MRI, and Brandon Tierney is tired of it.
Of course, BT's main concern is that the results come back clean, and the Mets superstar doesn't have to miss Opening Day. But after missing extended time with a plethora of mysterious, nagging injuries last season, BT says if the results don't show anything, then it's time to have deGrom push through the uncertainty.
"The Mets need to allow him to pitch if the MRI is clean, and more importantly, Jacob deGrom needs to take the baseball," Tierney said during Friday's show. "Take the training wheels off.
"I'm not gonna say the guy is imagining things, but you need to plow through injuries or soreness. Jacob deGrom, if the MRI is OK, you have to take the baseball."
DeGrom's MRI was scheduled for Friday morning after he reported shoulder tightness following a catch he had on Thursday. As a result, he was scratched from Friday's spring training start, and his status as the Opening Day starter is up in the air. Tierney will wait on the results, but if they don't show any damage or inflammation, it's time to fight through the discomfort and be the ace the Mets need to meet their high expectations for the season.
"Once we get back the results, we can react off of that. But right now, I'm going to work under the assumption that it's going to come back clean," Tierney said. "Because for the most part, every MRI this guy takes is back clean.
"If that's the case, I don't want to hear 'We're gonna put him on ice for two weeks, we're gonna push it back.' Take the baseball, and let's go."
