Trevor Bauer apologizes to Mets fans in 10-Tweet explanation thread

At least he owned it?

Trevor Bauer took to Twitter late Sunday night to apologize to Mets fans, basically saying in a 10-Tweet thread that what was seen as "trolling" was a mistake made by his marketing team as he weighed his final decision – which was, eventually, to join the Dodgers on a three-year deal.

"Mets fans, I owe you an explanation and an apology. My intention this entire offseason was to engage with fans in ways that made the off season and free agent process more interesting," Bauer began the series of Tweets. "Throughout the free agency process, my team prepared marketing materials for multiple organizations, as I didn't know where or when I would sign. In order to be prepared for a moment that could materialize very quickly, we had uploaded many of those to my website on the back-end. The plan was not to have those pages live until a decision had been made, which is obviously not what happened."

Bauer then said that "the resulting confusion is understandable and regrettable. My intention was never to mislead your fan base, nor was it to troll you in any way," and that he "had a fantastic time engaging with fans from many teams over the last few months."

The thread continued with Bauer saying that Mets fans "are as passionate and energetic a bunch as any," and that he looks forward to visiting Citi Field (the Dodgers are scheduled in August) and that he "hopes to hear you just as loud in person, even if it's not cheers for me."

The right-hander also announced that he will be donating $10,000 to four different New York nonprofits, and will enter everyone who entered the signed Mets hate giveaway into a raffle for tickets when the Dodgers play the Mets at Citi Field as make-goods for what he termed "an embarrassing and emotional moment for me."
