Nets general manager Sean Marks spoke to the media Friday and expressed optimism regarding James Harden’s return from a hamstring strain.

That outlook has changed.

The team announced Tuesday that Harden suffered a setback during a rehab session on Monday, and “will remain out indefinitely.” He was further evaluated after the setback and underwent an MRI.

Harden missed two games with hamstring tightness earlier this month, and left a win against the Knicks on April 5 after playing just over four minutes as the hamstring issue lingered. He was later diagnosed with a hamstring strain and has missed the last six games. Brooklyn has gone 3-3 in that span.

Kevin Durant suffered what he initially thought to be a minor hamstring strain earlier this season, and wound up missing two months. The Nets have played just seven games with Harden, Durant and Kyrie Irving on the floor at the same time.

Harden was putting up MVP numbers for the Nets since being traded from Houston, averaging 25.4 points and 11.0 assists per game.
