Gerard Gallant was asked about his job security during his end-of-season press conference on Wednesday, and the Rangers head coach clearly didn’t care for the fact that his job was in question by some outside the organization.
“I think we averaged 108 points in two years,” Gallant said. “That was excellent. We had a great first season. we lost to the defending champions in the conference final, and this year we lost in the first round. Did I have tough two weeks? Did we have a tough two weeks? Yeah. But besides that, I can't believe I have to answer some of these questions about me getting fired, brought up by the media. Disappointing.”
NHL head coaches seem to have less security than in other sports, and despite the overall success of the Blueshirts over the past two seasons, a first round exit by way of the hated Devils has led many to believe Gallant’s seat could be warming up. Clearly, Gallant disagrees that his job should even be in question.
“I got no reason to think anything besides what people put out there,” Gallant said. “I read the same things as you guys, I see the same posts, but nobody from this organization told me. I’m coming off what I think was two excellent years. We had one bad week and it cost us. If I can't stand by my record, there's something wrong. I think it’s pretty good. Not just the record here, the record moving forward.
“But we’re in New York, people put things out there, and that’s fine. I’ll get over it.”
