Ron Harper Jr. set Jersey Mike’s Arena ablaze on Thursday night, drilling a halfcourt heave at the buzzer to stun No. 1 Purdue in the biggest regular-season victory in Rutgers men’s basketball history.
Harper, who gave the Scarlet Knights the lead on their previous possession, fielded an inbounds pass with just over three seconds left on the clock and Rutgers trailing by one, rushed across midcourt and sent up a desperation shot at the buzzer from the end of the red “R” near midcourt, and hit nothing but net to give the unranked Scarlet Knights a statement victory.
Our own Jerry Recco had the radio call for one of the biggest moments in program history.
Harper, a New Jersey native, finished his big night with 30 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 5-for-7 from downtown. His last 3-point attempt will be remembered at Rutgers forever.
