After managing just one run against the lowly A’s on Tuesday night, the Yankees saw their team OPS drop to a league-worst .620 over the last month.
As a group, the Yankees are also easily at the bottom of the league with a .197 batting average over the last 30 days, but Aaron Boone says he isn’t frustrated by the team’s collective offensive struggles since Aaron Judge went on the IL.
“This is part of it. it’s grind time,” Boone said. “We gotta get some guys going, and we’re all a part of that.
“I don’t know if ‘frustration’ is the right word. We have a higher standard and expect more, and know we’re gonna be better. but we’re going through it right now a little bit. Overall this month, we’ve had a few guys that have gone through some struggles, but I wouldn’t call it frustration. I’d call it ‘this is get-to-work time,’ and how do we get guys going. That’s on all of us.”
The Yankees were an above-average offense when Judge was in the lineup, but have become arguably the worst in the league since he injured his toe, as veterans like Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu, Giancarlo Stanton, and Josh Donaldson (aside from his home run on Tuesday) have all struggled badly since Judge was lost.
“I know what these guys are capable of,” Boone said. “So any time you go through a long stretch where we’re having a hard time scoring runs - we know it’s gonna happen, whether it’s for a couple weeks here or there, you’re gonna have your upswings and downswings - but knowing what we have going out there, I know what we’re capable of. We have to continue working to getting them to where they need to be, because I know we’re capable of scoring a lot of runs.”
