Aaron Boone told reporters after Tuesday’s loss that the Yankee bats needed to be better, but praised the improvement of “at-bat quality” in comparison to Monday’s similar defeat.
That was enough to get Gio’s eyes rolling into the back of his head.
“You really want to make your fans puke?” Gio said. “They were just on the verge of puking with ‘at-bat quality.’”
Looking at the bottom half of the Yankees’ lineup, it was no surprise to Gio that the team once again struggled to generate runs, and lost their first season series to the Twins in 22 years.
“Wasteland,” Gio said of the Bombers’ 5-9 hitters. “Death Valley.”
It’s a familiar refrain, as the offense was the big component to last year’s ALCS sweep at the hands of the Astros, and Gio doesn’t see anything different on tap for 2023.
“People say it’s only April and it’s a long season, yes there is some truth to that,” Gio said. “However, if you were like me and felt like the Yankees made a big mistake by not making big changes in the offseason…they seemed to be complacent with the fact that they got swept in the ALCS.
“They’re always looking up at one of these other teams that are better than they are in the American League. It’s been the Astros, the Red Sox at times, the Rays.”
