Jay Bruce is making it tougher and tougher for the Yankees to leave him off the Opening Day roster.
Heading into Tuesday’s spring training game against the Tigers, Bruce was 4-for-8 with a home run and a double, and has added another dinger to that stat line with an opposite-field bomb on Tuesday.
Bruce took a Spencer Turnbull changeup over the wall in left field for a home run in the second inning, scoring Gleyber Torres and giving the Yanks a 2-0 lead. More importantly for Bruce, it’s another piece of evidence for his case to be on the Yankee roster come April 1.
Health will be an issue for Bruce, who appeared in 32 games last year and 98 in 2019, but he still showed plenty of pop in that 2019 season, smacking 26 home runs. His lefty bat could also offer some balance in the Bombers’ righty-heavy lineup.
