Steve Somers celebrates Juan Soto signing with Mets: 'You can tell Yogi, ''It's over''

As the Mets secured perhaps their biggest transaction in franchise history on Sunday night, Steve Somers had to stop by with Keith McPherson to give his thoughts on Juan Soto being Queens bound.

“The news was stunning, it was shocking,” Steve said. “And now you can tell Yogi, ‘It’s over.’

“Now, you have to make sure that Steinbrenner doesn’t put the Yankees up for sale, because Steve Cohen might buy them and own two New York teams.”

Of course, with Cohen’s riches and a fanbase starving to see its first championship in nearly four decades, Steve was already wondering what comes next for the Mets, with the ink barely dry on Soto’s contract. Still, it didn’t mean he wasn’t reveling in the reality that one of the game’s biggest stars now resides in Queens instead of the Bronx.

“If he can be a starting pitcher as well and also come out of the bullpen, it might be worth all this kind of money,” Steve said. “The Metropolitans have other issues that need to be addressed, including the starting rotation. It’s good getting Holmes. We’ll see if he works out as a starter. Getting Montas, that was a good move. Now, if they can get Manaea back, maybe Sasaki from Japan, and if Steve Cohen wants to continue spending some money, he can go after Corbin Burnes.

“Getting Soto is just terrific. You can make the argument that he’s not even in his prime, and he means so much to any lineup…he’s a gifted, once-in-a-generation baseball player. I don’t think anyone can live up to this kind of contract, but he doesn’t have to. All he has to do is be Juan Soto.”
