Babich sees progress in Bishop, safety group

The Bills defensive coordinator spoke to the media on Wednesday

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - Despite a rough game on Sunday night in Chicago against the Bears, Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich is seeing progress in safety Cole Bishop, especially now that's he's been on the field and getting valuable reps.

"I believe that in the group right now, obviously the best thing is we've got Cole back in the fold with things," Babich told reporters ahead of Wednesday's practice at One Bills Drive in Orchard Park.

"All those reps that he missed from his injury, now we're starting to make headway, in that way."

Bishop missed time during Bills training camp, and did not suit up for the team's first preseason game against the New York Giants.

He played the first series in Chicago as part of a defense that allowed a seven-play, 92-yard touchdown drive. He didn't return to the field after that.

"He's doing a nice job progressing," Babich said of the second-year safety from the University of Utah.

Babich spoke about the position group as a whole, including calling Damar Hamlin a "salty vet".

"I think when you look at it, there's a lot of different moving pieces right now, and we're seeing progress," Babich said. "Maybe it's delayed progress, whether it be from injury, availability. We'll be good."

On the field after Babich and offensive coordinator Joe Brady spoke, newly signed wide receiver Grant DuBose appeared to suffer a significant injury.

While taking part in 1-on-1 drills against defensive backs, DuBose dove for a football, but landed awkwardly on his shoulder. He was in a lot of pain as trainers tended to him.

Ultimately, a cart came out to take him back to the training facility and locker room.

Meanwhile, defensive end Joey Bosa received a veteran rest day.
