Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - As the Buffalo Bills are looking to get cap compliant before the start of the new league year, the team is moving on from a fan favorite.
As first reported by ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Flower, the Bills have released longtime nickel cornerback Taron Johnson.
The former fourth-round pick (121st overall), part of the first draft class for general manager Brandon Beane in the 2018 NFL Draft, will be a free agent for the first time in his career.
Johnson spent eight years with the Bills and was a key piece in the defense, starting 87 games. Johnson totaled 462 total tackles and seven interceptions, with his most notable play as a member of the Bills being the pick-six in the 2020 AFC Divisional Round against the Baltimore Ravens.
According to WGR Bills beat reporter Sal Capaccio, the Bills will save $1.9 million in cap space, but be hit with a $9.5 million dead cap hit this season due to the release of Johnson at the start of the league year.
