Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Bills continue their trek toward Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday evening when they host the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.
The Bills and Chiefs have had a number of matchups over the last several years, but Sunday's showdown may have some extra juice to it.
This game will be just the second time the Chiefs have played in Orchard Park since 2020, and the first with Bills fans in attendance at Highmark Stadium. It will be Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' first road playoff game of his career.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott understand how much this playoff matchup means for not just the organization, but also to members of "Bills Mafia" all across the world.
"The number of times we've been there (Arrowhead Stadium), I think it's been six out of the last seven games, their crowd definitely makes a difference," said McDermott during his appearance on the "Extra Point Show" on WGR. "I know our crowd, I know what they've done, what they've established in our house. This is our chance to show the NFL community what 'Bills Mafia' is all about."
These two teams certainly are no stranger to one another, especially in the postseason. While the Bills have had good results against the Chiefs in the regular season with a 3-1 record, Buffalo is 0-2 in the playoffs since 2020.
"When you look at it just overall, they're a good team, we're a good team. They've got good players, we've got good players," McDermott said with Sal Capaccio and Joe DiBiase. "We're really just focused on this game, to be honest with you. Again, like I've said before, it's getting our level of execution and our level of play to the point where it needs to be come Sunday night."
With so much on the line with this game on Sunday, the Bills ended up having a short week of preparation and recovery following Monday's AFC Wild Card Round win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. That game was originally scheduled for Sunday, but was moved back by a day due to inclement winter weather in Western New York.
Where the Bills will only have six days of work to prepare for Sunday's game, the Chiefs will have had eight days to ready themselves after they beat the Miami Dolphins last week Saturday in Kansas City.
"It's what we deal with. It's how you respond to it more than anything," McDermott said. "From last week's game and some of the challenges leading up the last 24-48 hours into that game, to the beginning part, at least, to the middle of this week with the snow around, I just think it's how we respond to it. I've seen a tremendous response from people in our community, clearing roads. Everyone just coming together for public safety, No. 1, but also to help us prepare the way we need to prepare."
