McDermott: Great win for Bills, Western New York and 'Bills Mafia' overall

Bills head coach Sean McDermott addressed the media on Sunday following his team's comeback win over the Ravens in the season opener

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - Under the bright lights of prime-time in the season opener at home, the Buffalo Bills completed one of the more exciting comebacks anyone will see in football against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night.

After trailing for most of the game, which included a 15-point deficit with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, the Bills somehow dug deep and found a way to put up 16 points on the Ravens to secure a Week 1 win, 41-40, in the final home opener of the current Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.

While the offensive push came on the shoulders of the reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen, he put the Bills in a spot with time winding down in the game for a game-winning field goal to come from veteran kicker Matt Prater, who was only signed to the team's practice squad this past week to fill in for Tyler Bass, who was placed on Injured Reserve with a groin injury

Despite just arriving in town the other day, the 41-year-old didn't miss the mark, hitting from 32 yards out as time expired to secure Buffalo a win to kick off the 2025 season.

"Great win for our team, great win for our community and 'Bills Mafia' overall. Couldn't be prouder," said Bills head coach Sean McDermott following Sunday night's win. "I'm happy for Matt, just joining us here and being able to do that."

Even through the struggles on both sides of the ball, at times, over the course of the game, McDermott was pleased that his group was able to stick with it and come out on the winning side in the end.

"Whenever you're trying to start a season as a coach, it's important that you can win a close one, because it helps the buy in," McDermott said with reporters. "We've got a lot of new faces in that locker room, and guys got a chance tonight to experience coming together as a team for the first time and experiencing Buffalo, a city of winners."

While this win was exhilarating, McDermott says it is always a good thing to have something to take away from a game such as this.

"It wasn't pretty at times, so we'll learn. We've got a lot to learn from this game, and it's always good that you can learn after a win," he said.
