(SportsRadio 610) - Texans rookie wide receiver John Metchie III announced Sunday he was recently diagnosed with leukemia and will likely not play football this season.
In a statement released by the Texans, Metchie said he is receiving great medical care and is in good spirits.
"I expect to make a recovery at a later point in time," the statement said. "As a result of this diagnosis, I will likely not be playing football this season. My main focus will be on my health and recovery. Thank you in advance for your support and well-wishes. I cannot wait to come back stronger than ever. God bless."
Metchie was recently diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, the most curable form of the disease. He was already recovering from a torn ACL sustained during the SEC Championship game last season.
The Texans selected Metchie in the second round with the 44th overall pick in this year's draft. Houston sent picks No. 68, 108 and 124 to the Cleveland Browns to select the former Alabama wide receiver.
Metchie signed a standard four-year rookie contract with the Texans worth $8.07 million with a $3.049 million signing bonus and three years of guaranteed salary.
