A multi-vehicle crash involving 13 cars triggered heavy gridlock on Interstate 81 Northbound early this morning. The wreck occurred just north of Exit 178 for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, near the Luzerne and Lackawanna County line. Emergency crews responded to the scene to clear the vehicles, which caused major tie-ups and delayed morning commuters. There is no official word yet on what caused the crash. Minor injuries were reported.
Adding to the morning's traffic delays, PennDOT is executing scheduled right lane closures today on Interstate 81 Northbound between the Avoca Airport exit (Exit 178) and Davis Street (Exit 181) from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for manual patching.
