SCRANTON, PA — The months-long vacancy on the Lackawanna County Board of Commissioners officially ends today as former county economic director Brenda Sacco will be sworn into office.

Sacco's public swearing-in ceremony was held at 10 a.m. at the county courthouse, a direct result of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's ruling on Monday. That decision upheld the county’s Home Rule Charter process, which gives the Lackawanna County Democratic Committee the authority to nominate a temporary replacement for a vacated seat.

Sacco was the choice of the county judges from a list submitted by the Democratic Committee to replace Matt McGloin, who resigned in February.

Her term, however, may be extremely brief. Her role as a temporary commissioner is set to end once the results of the special election on November 4 are certified later this month. Sacco is not a candidate in the special election, which features Democratic nominee Thom Welby, Republican nominee Chet Merli, and independent Michael Cappellini vying for the remainder of the term. There is some question as to whether Sacco's attorney's might contest the special election.
