SCRANTON, PA — Lackawanna County Interim Commissioner Brenda Sacco is withdrawing her lawsuit that challenged the legality of this week's special election, paving the way for Democrat Thom Welby to officially take the commissioner seat.

Welby secured the victory in the special election held on Tuesday, earning the right to serve the remainder of the term left vacant by former Commissioner Matt McGloin. McGloin resigned from his post back in February, leading to the need for the special election to determine his successor.

Sacco, who was appointed as the interim commissioner, had her lawyer previously state that she had hoped to fill the remainder of McGloin’s term herself. However, in a shift, Sacco has now confirmed that Welby will take over the seat early next month once the election results are officially certified.

The withdrawal of the lawsuit removes a potential legal hurdle and ensures a smoother transition for Welby to join the Lackawanna County Board of Commissioners.
