Luzerne County officials are turning to surveillance technology to stop persistent vandalism at the closed Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge. Over the past several weeks, trespassers have repeatedly cut the security fencing installed to keep the public off the deteriorating span, which was permanently closed in March 2025 due to safety concerns. In addition to the property damage, authorities have observed individuals ignoring warning signs and walking across the bridge, creating significant liability and safety risks.

The recurring damage has forced the county to repeatedly hire contractors to repair the fence, resulting in mounting costs for taxpayers. To combat the issue, officials are now installing surveillance cameras around the bridge to identify those responsible for the destruction. In coordination with these efforts, police patrols have been increased on both sides of the Susquehanna River. Anyone with information regarding the vandalism or the identity of those cutting the fencing is urged to contact the Nanticoke City Police.
