LACKAWANNA COUNTY, PA – Independent and unaffiliated candidates hoping to run for Lackawanna County commissioner or clerk of judicial records in the upcoming special elections have less than a week to file the necessary paperwork. The deadline to submit nomination papers and secure the required 863 signatures from registered county voters is 4 p.m. on Monday, September 15.
The special elections are set for November 4 to fill two recently vacated positions. The county's Democratic and Republican parties will nominate their candidates through nomination certificates, which do not have a signature requirement.
Meanwhile, a legal battle over the commissioner vacancy continues. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has agreed to take up the matter of filling the seat, though a timeline for the review is not yet clear. A separate hearing on the case is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Lackawanna County Court.
