SCRANTON, PA — Geisinger Community Medical Center (CMC) in Scranton is expanding its security measures, requiring all patients, visitors, and employees entering through public hospital doors to go through walk-through metal detectors.
Under the updated safety protocol, individuals entering the facility must remove metal objects from their pockets prior to passing through the screening equipment. If a walk-through detector is triggered, hospital security personnel will conduct a follow-up scan using a handheld metal detector.
The security enhancements at the Scranton hospital are part of a broader health system initiative launched in March. Geisinger has previously utilized metal detectors at its emergency department entrances since 2021, but is now rolling out walk-through screening checkpoints across all public entrances systemwide.
Health system administrators expect to have the enhanced screening protocols fully operational across all Geisinger hospital locations by early next year. Patients and visitors are advised to build in additional time for security screening when arriving for appointments or visitation.
