Pennsylvania State Police have released a timeline regarding the fatal officer-involved shooting that took place Monday night in Sugarloaf Township. The incident began around 9:30 p.m. when a local officer attempted a traffic stop on West County Road, but the driver refused to pull over for approximately two miles. When the vehicle finally stopped, the driver—described only as a 66-year-old male—exited with a long gun and advanced toward the patrol car. Investigators report the man fired multiple rounds, striking the cruiser several times before the officer returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene.

While the shooter’s name is being withheld pending family notification, police did take a passenger into custody. That passenger, a 50-year-old male, was not injured in the exchange but was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant and transported to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility. The Sugarloaf Township officer has been placed on administrative leave while the District Attorney’s Office and the State Police Troop N Major Case Team conduct a formal review of the shooting.
