The Luzerne Intermediate Unit and local law enforcement are investigating an incident where a Solomon-Plains Elementary School student was mistakenly left inside a contracted school transportation van for several hours last week.
According to the Superintendent of the Wilkes-Barre Area School District, the alarming situation came to light on Friday afternoon when parents arrived at the school for afternoon pickup, only to discover their elementary-aged child was missing. School officials quickly launched a search and located the student still in the back of the transport van, where they had been trapped since the morning commute. The student was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and was fortunately determined to be okay. District officials confirmed that the driver responsible for checking the vehicle has since been terminated by the contracted transportation company.
