HARRISBURG, Pa. — With only one day remaining before Pennsylvania's June 30 constitutional budget deadline, pressure is mounting on state lawmakers to include affordable housing legislation in the final spending package.
Members of the advocacy group Pennsylvania Stands Up gathered at the State Capitol on Monday to voice their demands. The advocates are calling on state leaders to integrate measures that would expand access to emergency shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness and ease regulatory restrictions on manufactured housing to make living arrangements more accessible for low-income residents.
The demonstration comes at a critical juncture as leadership in the state House, the state Senate, and Governor Josh Shapiro continue intense, closed-door negotiations to reach a comprehensive fiscal agreement.
While top lawmakers from both parties have expressed optimism about avoiding a severely prolonged impasse this summer, advocates stress that housing initiatives must remain a central priority and not be pushed aside in favor of other high-profile budget disputes like education funding and tax structures.
