The massive project to widen Interstate 81 to three lanes between Hanover Twp. and Wilkes-Barre Twp.in Luzerne County has a delayed projected start date and has ballooned in costs since the proposal was first unveiled 2 years ago, but the design remains the same, officials said Tuesday at a public hearing about the plans. Tuesday’s meeting at Luzerne County Community College was the fourth public meeting about the project, which was initially estimated to cost between $200 and $300 million and start in 2025. PENNDOT is seeking to align Interstate 81 and add the third lane between mile marker 161 in Hanover Twp. and marker 168 near the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre Twp., with traffic expected to increase 40 percent in coming years.
