A federal inmate housed at the Lackawanna County Prison pleaded guilty Monday to voluntary manslaughter after beating another prisoner to death during an altercation over a newspaper. Lackawanna County District Attorney Brian Gallagher announced the guilty plea entered by 44-year-old Eli Calero in connection with the September death of Michael Jones Jr.
According to authorities, Jones died from blunt force trauma to the head following the fatal dispute inside the facility. Calero now faces the possibility of decades added to his prison sentence for the felony conviction. Gallagher stated that Calero is scheduled to be formally sentenced for the killing in approximately 90 days.
