The Keystone Sanitary Landfill has responded to the State Dept. of Environmental Protection by submitting its strategies to reduce odors and emissions, while disputing the DEP's notice of violation. According to published reports, the steps including using drones to detect areas with methane concentrations, expediting the installation of new gas collection equipment, accelerating installation of a permanent cover on top of 25 acres of the landfill’s previous expansion, and replacing its two surface leachate lagoons with two 2.5-million-gallon enclosed storage tanks. The DEP has received about 600 odor complaints regarding the landfill in Dunmore & Throop since September.
